My activities in STILL IMAGE COMPRESSION
I have been working on still image compression between 1994 and 1998 (as
a research engineer at Alcatel Alsthom Recherche laboratories until june
1996). I was interested mainly in compression of continuous tone still
images. Here are the main activities I have had in this field:
-
"Intelligent" Compression (adaptive compression, progressive transmission,
focalisation, ...).
-
New compression algorithms: wavelets, fractals, ...
-
Participation to JPEG standardisation (ISO
/ SC29 / WG1): I have
been part of CN29
Commision of French Normalization body AFNOR.
I know well the technical of the JPEG standard (ISO/IEC 10918, including
extensions of part 3 which have been approved in 1997). I also followed
the beginning of the work for defining a new lossless JPEG ("JPEG-LS",
approved in 2000 under reference ISO/IEC
14495-1), and the first steps toward the definition of the next generation
standard ("JPEG-2000") covering very low bit rates using new technologies
and that should be approved soon under reference ISO/IEC 15444.
-
I also know (and have been developping some stuff around) the JPEG
freeware of IJG (Independant JPEG Group).
-
I was also part of the steering committee of the international conference
on
MULTIMEDIA & STANDARDISATION '97 held in Paris.

Livepicture (previously FITS),
company created in Toulouse (France) but now located in California, specialised

launched with Hewlett-Packard the "Imaging
for the Internet" project, based on FLASHPIX
format of Kodak (a kind of multi-resolution JPEG).
